A webfont is a font resource that a website makes available for the browser to use when rendering its text.

What it means

Webfonts allow a design to use a typeface that is not already installed on the visitor’s device. They bring practical questions about file size, loading behavior, language coverage and licensing. A specimen image, by contrast, shows a fixed picture of text and does not make the font available for other words.

Use it in practice

Load only the styles and character sets needed, within the license terms. Check how the page looks before the font arrives and if it fails to load.

Watch out for

Do not assume a font being visible on another website grants permission to redistribute its file. Avoid hiding essential text while waiting for a font.
