Baseline

The baseline is the imaginary line on which most letters sit. Descenders, such as the lower part of p, extend below it.

What it means

Baselines provide a reference for aligning text of different sizes or different families. The visible shapes may have small optical overshoots, and the text box includes more than just the letters. A baseline grid is a separate layout technique that places lines of text on a recurring vertical rhythm.

Use it in practice

Use baseline alignment when a small label sits beside larger text. Check the result visually with real words and numbers.

Watch out for

Aligning the bottom edges of two CSS boxes does not necessarily align their text baselines. Descenders should not be mistaken for accidental misalignment.
