What it means

It is commonly assessed with a letter such as H rather than a curved letter, which may extend slightly beyond the alignment line for optical reasons. Cap height helps explain why capitals in two fonts can look different in scale even when their CSS font sizes match.

Use it in practice

Align capitalized headings and adjacent marks by how they look. Use the cap height as a useful reference when sizing a logo beside text.

Watch out for

The top of a text element’s CSS box is not necessarily the top of its capitals. Avoid assuming identical font-size values create visual alignment.
