Font pairing

Font pairing is the deliberate use of two or more typefaces together, with a clear role for each.

What it means

A pairing can create contrast through structure, proportion or tone while sharing enough qualities to feel coherent. The relationship matters more than whether two names are popular together. First decide what the page needs: a distinctive heading voice, readable prose, compact labels or technical annotations.

Use it in practice

Start with two families and test the actual heading and paragraph together. Compare their apparent size, weight and spacing rather than just their CSS values.

Watch out for

Do not introduce a second font if changing weight or size within the first family already solves the problem.
